A federally funded abstinence-only education program barred from Rhode Island's public schools last spring has been approved for the classroom.
According to The Providence Journal, Heritage of Rhode Island revised lesson plans in response to guidance from the state Department of Education to meet state standards. Peter McWalters, the state's education commissioner, announced the lessons are now approved for use in high schools.
Lidia Goodinson, along with other parents, lobbied the State Education Department on behalf of the Heritage program.
"Heritage's 'Right-Time, Right-Place' curriculum offers positive information that will empower our teens to take control of their lives," she said. "This abstinence program can only help our present situation and help brighten our children's futures."
