Canada Wants Study on Effects of Same-Sex Marriage on Families

A coalition of pro-family Canadian organizations is calling for the government to appoint a royal commission to study marriage and family issues -- a study that would inevitably revive the debate concerning same-sex marriage, the Vancouver Sun reported.

The coalition, which consists of Focus on the Family Canada, the Institute for Canadian Values and Canada Family Action, is reacting, in part, to a move by the Canadian Parliament last month to defeat a motion that would have allowed lawmakers to reconsider the 2005 decision to legalize gay marriage.

Dave Quist, executive director of Focus on the Family Canada, said such a commission would show how government decisions, such as the legalization of same-sex marriage, affect families.

"Same-sex marriage is one piece of a big puzzle of the institution of marriage," he said. The commission, he added, would also study other issues such as tax policy and child care.
