Schwarzenegger Would Not Sign Gay Marriage Into Law

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger told a group of high school students he would not sign legislation to create same-sex marriage, the San Francisco Bee reported.

"No, I wouldn't sign it," he said, "because the people of California have voted on that issue."

In 2000 California voters passed Proposition 22 mandating that "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."

Assemblyman Mark Leno introduced a measure that would change the wording from "one man and one woman" to "two persons." A similar measure passed the Legislature last year, but was vetoed by Schwarzenegger.

"The people can make the decision -- should make the decision," Schwarzenegger said. "But it should not be up to me or the Legislature."
