New Mexico Inmates Have Right to be Baptized

Officials at the Curry County Detention Center in New Mexico have agreed to allow a portable baptismal pool to be used at their facility, after receiving a letter from Liberty Counsel.

Workers with the prison ministry of the Sixteenth & Pile Church of Christ in Clovis, N.M., contacted the legal firm after officials at the detention center refused to permit baptisms. Liberty Counsel founder Mat Staver sent a letter to the county, explaining it was in violation of the federal Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act.

"Fortunately, in this case the issue was resolved," Staver told OneNewsNow. "But unfortunately for many people behind bars, religious freedom is something that they have to constantly fight for. And even though inmates have obviously committed various crimes for one reason or another to be in prison, we still must make sure that they have every opportunity to hear the Gospel."
