BetOnSports, an online gambling company, has pleaded guilty to racketeering charges, according to an announcement last week by U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway.
The Associated Press reported that her office has been pressing a 22-count indictment against the company and its top executives. The London-based BetOnSports was barred in November from accepting any bets from U.S. gamblers. An attorney for BetOnSports said the company is going out of business.
Chad Hills, Focus on the Family Action's gambling analyst, called Internet gambling the "perfect storm."
"It combines availability and accessibility with anonymity," he said. "Addiction and bankruptcy are a mere mouse click away, not to mention the ominous potential for money laundering, organized crime and the funding of terrorist groups."
