Amniotic Stem Cells Offer Ethical Alternative

Amniotic-fluid stem cells show promise for regenerating damaged kidney tissue, according to a study featured in the December issue of Cell Proliferation.

Dr. Anthony Atala used amniotic stem cells, found in the fluid surrounding preborn babies, to regenerate human livers and other tissues.

"After the exciting discovery that ordinary adult cells can be reprogrammed back to an embryonic-like state, this research is a good reminder that ethical research continues to move forward with adult stem cells as well,” said Dawn Vargo, associate bioethics analyst for Focus on the Family Action. “Pluripotent adult stem cells — in this instance, amniotic-fluid stem cells — continue to revolutionize the world of disease treatment."
