The Alliance Defense Fund has pledged to defend Puerto Rico’s proposed marriage amendment in court if legal attacks are filed against it. The measure would legally define marriage in the U.S. territory as a union between one man and one woman.
“The government should promote and encourage strong families," ADF Senior Counsel Glen Lavy said. "Marriage is the most unifying issue in society and is supported by the vast majority of people in Puerto Rico, regardless of their religious beliefs or political association.
“That is why the opponents of Resolution 99 are so desperate to keep it from the voters. They think the people of Puerto Rico are too ignorant to decide such an important social issue. But in a democracy, the people, not law professors and the intellectual elite, decide fundamental social questions.”
The Legislature has not yet scheduled a vote on the resolution.
