University of South Carolina Sued over Religious Discrimination

The Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) and the Christian Legal Society (CLS) have sued the University of South Carolina after religious student groups were denied access to student activity fees that are available to other student organizations.

Steven H. Aden, ADF chief litigation counsel, said this is a clear violation of the law.

"The Supreme Court held 13 years ago that public universities may not discriminate against Christian student groups on the basis of their religious viewpoint,” he told Family News in Focus.

The lawsuit also alleges viewpoint discrimination against religious and other student organizations.

“Christian student groups shouldn’t be discriminated against for their beliefs,” said Casey Mattox, attorney for the CLS Center for Law and Religious Freedom. “It has been well-established for over a decade that this type of discrimination violates the First Amendment.”
