Good News: Study Links Lower Blood Pressure to Happy Marriages

If you’re happily married, your heart is probably healthier.  That’s according to a study from Brigham Young University.

Researchers found the happier the pair, the lower the blood pressure. In fact, those couples that reported greatest satisfaction from their union scored four points lower on blood pressure readings than single adults. Those readings dropped even further during sleep, translating into increased heart health.

“There seem to be some unique health benefits from marriage,” study author Julianne Holt-Lunstad said. “It’s not just being married that benefits health — what’s really the most protective of health is having a happy marriage.”

She pointed out that spouses often encourage healthy habits in their mates and offer a support system.
