A New Jersey high school football coach who was told he can’t pray with his team before games is appealing the court’s decision.
Last week, the 3rd U.S Circuit Court of Appeals told Marcus Borden he cannot participate in prayer with his players, including bowing his head or bending a knee. The court ruled the East Brunswick High School coach, who has prayed with his team for 23 years, was promoting or endorsing religion.
Bruce Hausknecht, judicial analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said he was disappointed by the court’s decision
“If the courts of the land have come to the point where they require this coach to show disrespect for the prayer of others in order to avoid an Establishment Clause violation, then the First Amendment has been turned on its head and has become an enemy of our first freedoms rather than their guarantor,” he said.
