California universities and research institutes have been given $271 million in taxpayer-funded grants to build 12 stem-cell centers that will focus on life-destroying embryonic research.
Researchers are planning to spend an additional $560 million to add 800,000 square feet of research space and 2,200 scientists, The New York Times reported. Stanford University will receive the largest award — nearly $44 million — to build a $200 million stem-cell center.
California's embryonic stem-cell research program, which has not treated or cured one patient, is scheduled to spend nearly $3 billion over the next decade.
Dawn Vargo, bioethics analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said: "It's unfortunate to see that Californian taxpayer dollars continue to be put toward unethical and unproven research when the evidence continues to accumulate in favor of adult stem cells.”
