Dr. Dobson Examines 'Breathtaking' California Marriage Ruling

On today's Focus on the Family radio broadcast, Dr. James Dobson updated listeners on last week's outrageous decision by the California Supreme Court to redefine marriage.

"It was a breathtaking overreach by a court and one that has far-reaching implications, not only for California, but for the country and the family at large," said Dr. Dobson, founder and chairman of Focus on the Family.

The court struck down Proposition 22, a voter-approved statute protecting traditional marriage, thus legalizing same-sex "marriage."

Joining Dr. Dobson on the broadcast were Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council; Tom Minnery, senior vice president of government and public policy at Focus on the Family Action; and Pastor Jack Hibbs of Calvary Chapel of Chino Hills, Calif.

"Judicial activism is back in this country with a vengeance," Perkins said. "They completely overstepped the Legislature and established public policy. This is a judicial shotgun wedding."

Minnery said the ruling makes a state marriage amendment absolutely essential. More than 1.1 million signatures have been collected, qualifying the amendment for the November ballot. That means California voters will have the opportunity to define marriage in their state.

"Marriage means the union of a man and a woman," Minnery said. "It’s always meant that."
