House Subcommittee Considers Protections for 'Transgendered' Individuals

A U.S. House subcommittee heard today that discrimination against "transgender" Americans apparently is pervasive in the U.S.

The Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions Subcommittee hearing came in response to the Employment Non-Discrimination Act — passed by the House in November — which gives special rights to homosexuals in the workplace but doesn't include "transgendered" individuals. The Senate has not taken up the legislation.

Ashley Horne, federal policy analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said: “This hearing on alleged discrimination against people who self-identify as 'transgender' is simply a ruse to get 'gender identity' included the next time Congress tries to pass the Employment Nondiscrimination Act.”

Several gay-activist groups and "transgendered" individuals participated in the hearing. Glen Lavy, senior counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund, was the only family advocate present.
