Dobson to Listeners: Don't Let the Media Keep You From Voting

Gary Bauer describes what a change in power would be like.

Dr. James Dobson, founder and chairman of Focus on the Family Action, on today's Focus on the Family radio broadcast, spoke with Gary Bauer, president of American Values, about attempts by the mainstream media to discourage conservatives this election season.

"We're only one week away from an extremely important election," Dobson told listeners.

It is imperative, he said, for conservatives to be alert to what's at stake. Dobson asked Bauer whether he's ever seen the media more biased and more determined to suppress conservative turnout.

"I thought I had seen it all," Bauer said. "This has been unbelievable. It's not even camouflaged. Big, liberal media has been engaging in an all-out war on the Christian vote -- to suppress that vote, to discourage faith-based voters, to make them think through distorted polls that the election is already over."

Tom Minnery, senior vice president of government and public policy for Focus on the Family Action and also a guest on today's broadcast, said the media seem too focused on suppressing the values vote.

"There's herd instinct in the media -- especially in Washington," he said. "I was part of it when I was a reporter in Washington. There is one dominant story -- the story is that social conservatives are so disgusted by the Republican majorities that they will stay home."

Bauer said the media chorus may be swaying the public.

"There's one particular poll done reportedly by conservatives here in Washington," he said, "that shows that one in four values voters is planning on staying home this November because they're so discouraged by what they've been reading in the media. And if that poll is accurate, that is a tragedy on all the things we care about, particularly the sanctity of human life and preserving marriage as the union of one man and one woman."

Dobson pointed out that if conservatives do choose to stay home, it is highly probable Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., will be the next speaker of the House.

"And this is what she stands for," Dobson said, "these are her policies as reflected by her votes:

"She voted against every Republican tax cut, including the ending of the marriage-penalty tax; she voted for the largest tax increase in American history; she voted 19 times against eliminating the death tax; she's voted five times to raise gasoline taxes; she voted against the historic welfare-reform bill; she voted against the right to say 'One nation under God'; she voted against requiring voters to be identified so we can be sure that only legal citizens vote; she voted against requiring English on ballots; she voted against the death penalty 12 times; she voted against the defense of marriage; she voted at least eight times against banning even the most extreme abortion -- partial-birth abortion; she voted against the bill that would ban the transportation of a minor girl across state lines without parental consent; she voted 31 times to use your local or federal tax dollars to fund abortions; she's gotten an F from the National Rifle Association; she voted against building a fence on the border; she voted to cut intelligence gathering multiple times before and even after 9/11; and on every energy issue she favors no drilling, no refineries and no nuclear energy of any kind. That is just a short list -- it is longer in reality -- of what Nancy Pelosi stands for."

Bauer said Pelosi is far out of the mainstream and far on the left fringes of American political life.

"I hate to remind you of this, but under our Constitutional system, if she's the speaker of the House, she's third in line for the presidency if something, God forbid, ever happened to the president and the vice president," he said. "It's an extraordinary change in our government if this lady becomes the head of the House of Representatives."

Dobson said values voters must be educated about the issues and the candidates, and must show up on Nov. 7.
