Liberal Group Seeks Info on Crisis-Pregnancy Centers

CREW files suit against HHS for financial reports.

Citizens for Responsibility in Washington (CREW) has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Health and Human Services for failing to provide it with financial reports of government grants to crisis-pregnancy centers.

Melanie Sloan, a spokeswoman for CREW, told Family News in Focus the money is funding misinformation to women and teens.

“For example they tell them that there’s an association between breast cancer and abortion," she said, "and, apparently, that’s not true.”

Ignoring numerous reports that say otherwise, Sloan bases her claims on a discredited report given to Congress earlier this year.

Kristin Hansen, spokeswoman for Care Net, said CREW has a long track record of picking on pro-life groups.

“This group has gone after Dr. Dobson, they’ve gone after the Abstinence Clearinghouse," she said. "Clearly, their goal is to win a few points by picking out groups that are doing some good and turning them into a political punching bag.”

Since 2001, the Bush administration has granted $30 million to select CPCs to use for non-religious purposes. Hansen said if CREW was consistent, it would go after Planned Parenthood, which is known for failing to give women complete information on abortion, yet receives far more government funding.

“Planned Parenthood has received more than $250 million a year of taxpayer funding," she said. "That’s worth a look to find out are women given accurate information from groups like those.”
