On Wednesday, a U.S. Senate committee will vote on a bill related to the Food and Drug Administration. Two amendments attached to the bill could save women's lives and limit abortions.
Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., has filed a number of amendments related to abortion pill RU-486 to S. 1082, which is before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.
The first amendment would suspend the availability of any drug approved under the FDA's subpart H category that has resulted in more deaths than lives saved — RU-486 has claimed the lives of at least six women but has not been documented as having saved any lives.
The second would lift the liability protection that currently shields mifepristone — one of the two drugs in the RU-486 chemical-abortion combination — so women or their families can seek damages if they are injured, harmed or killed as a result of use of this drug.
Ashley Horne, federal policy analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said the amendments would save lives.
"It is important for senators to hear from their constituents on bills or amendments that affect family values," she said. "We applaud the effort of Sen. Coburn to stand for the sanctity of life and for the health and safety of women by offering these two pro-life amendments."
