Radical Population Group Suggests Limiting Family Size to Combat Global Warming

Says government intervention may be unavoidable.

Optimum Population Trust (OPT), a British population control group, suggested this month that compulsory restrictions on family size may have to be instituted to save the planet.

In May, OPT made the brash claim that if couples had one less child, they could cut their family’s carbon dioxide output by the equivalent of 620 cross-Atlantic flights. Now, an OPT report titled “Youthquake” claims that to avoid environmental damage, government limits on family size may be unavoidable.

Jack Willke, president of the International Right to Life Federation, said it's just a new face on a tired argument.

“They said these exact things when the world population was exactly half of what it is today,” he said. “Not only has the world created more food, but the United States alone could feed the entire world.”

Kiera McCaffrey with the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights said it would be foolish to put mandatory limits on having children when birth rates around the globe are already declining.

“There isn’t the replacement rate, as it is," she told Family News in Focus. "These people are really on the moon if this is their idea of how they are going to save the Earth.”
