The homeschooling movement continues to see a dramatic increase in the U.S. Experts estimate it has been growing at 7 to 12 percent annually, with perhaps more than 2 million students being taught at home.
Brian Ray, president of the National Home Education Research Institute, told Family News in Focus that homeschooling has a strong appeal for parents.
“People want a good solid academic education for their children," he said. "They want a safe environment for their children, safety from drugs and alcohol, safety from pre-marital sexual pressure."
And, he added, they want strong families.
Michael Smith with the Home School Foundation said homeschool students inspire others who otherwise might not choose to teach their kids at home.
“They see that they function socially as normal people," he said. "They also see that these families that are homeschooling are being drawn closer together as a result of having the children at home.”
