Marriage Under Attack in Maryland

'This is an all-out attack, an assault by the homosexual activists and the homosexual lobby.'

More than a dozen bills in the Maryland Legislature are taking aim at marriage. Some would redefine marriage; others would destroy it.

“This is an all-out attack, an assault on the state of Maryland by the homosexual activists and the homosexual lobby to push same-sex 'marriage,' ” Republican Delegate Don Dwyer said.

Under several of the measures, “marriage” would only apply in a religious context. Doug Stiegler, director of Maryland’s Family Protection Lobby, said the state essentially is divorcing marriage.

“It says that (at) your church, you could have a religious marriage, but in public, you’re going to have to call it domestic partnership or civil unions, depending on which one of the bills passes," he said.

Another marriage-related bill exempts domestic partners from the inheritance tax; yet another makes civil "marriage" available to everyone.
