A Heritage Foundation study shows school choice is on the upswing. About 150,000 schoolkids in the U.S. are receiving public scholarships to go to private schools.
"The bottom line is that more kids than ever are able to be in schools or in educational opportunities of their parents' choosing rather their government-assigned public school," said Evan Feinberg, research assistant in Domestic Policy Studies at The Heritage Foundation.
Between 1 million and 2 million students are home-schooled — something more than half of Americans now approve of.
"In terms of public opinion, home-schooling is gaining the day," said Mike Smith, president of the Home School Legal Defense Association. "Home schooling is now legal in every state."
Charter schools, which are publicly funded, give parents more control and students more options.
All of these school-choice options provide hope for the millions of students trapped in failing public schools.
