Good News: Casino Industry on the Losing End in Two States

Americans aren't buying the lies about fame and fortune.

After a long winning streak, the gambling industry is counting its losses. Last month, lawmakers in Massachusetts and Kentucky turned down proposals to expand gambling.

Tom Grey, head of the National Coalition Against Gambling Expansion, said Americans aren't buying the lies about fame and fortune.

“Since 2004, there have been 10 states that have gone to the ballot box in statewide referendums and voted ‘No’ to either bringing casinos in or expanding the number of casinos within their communities," he said.

Gray said people are doing the math.

“You pay, whether you gamble or not, because you pay for the people who are brought down by gambling," he said.

Evelio Silvera, executive director of CasiNO Watch, said gambling may feed local economies, but again, the numbers don't add up.

“For every dollar of tax revenue the state receives," he said, "they are having to spend up to three in new social costs."
