University Sued over Pro-Evolution Web Site

Federal government spent $500,000 to design the offensive page.

Two professors at the University of California, Berkeley, are being sued over a government-funded Web site that promotes evolution.

Kevin Snider, an attorney with the Pacific Justice Institute, said UnderstandingEvolution.com has at least two strikes against it: UC Berkeley accepted a $500,000 check from the federal government to design the site, and has been critical of creationism.

“That is a violation of the Establishment Clause," Snider said. "The government cannot determine what is orthodoxy and theology.”

Snider argued the case last week before the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

“They crossed the line when the university takes a position that one view is correct and the other is not," he said.

Candi Cushman, education analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said the university's promotion of evolution is an attempt to resuscitate a dying social movement.

“We’re seeing more and more scientists step up and say they see weaknesses and flaws in this theory," she said. "Those that want to have a monopoly of thought on this issue are feeling threatened.”
