Interfaith churches from across California are uniting in support of traditional marriage.
ProtectMarriage.com, a coalition of local, state and national groups, is attempting to get 1 million Catholics, Jews, Mormons, Muslims, evangelical Christians, Sikhs and Hindus to post "Yes on Proposition 8" signs on their lawns. Prop. 8, a proposed state constitutional amendment which goes to voters in November, would restore the definition of marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
"This is a rising up over a 5,000-year-old institution that is being hammered right now," Jim Garlow, pastor of Skyline Church in La Mesa, told the Los Angeles Times.
Garlow helped organize 3,400-person conference calls across denominations to coordinate campaign support for the proposed constitutional amendment.
"What binds us together is one common obsession: . . . marriage," he said. "If Proposition 8 fails, there is an inevitable loss of religious freedom."
