California's Marriage Amendment Draws Big Names on Both Sides

Apple Inc. took a rare political stand last week by committing $100,000 to fight California's marriage-protection amendment.

Apple joins companies such as Google and Pacific Gas & Electric Co. in opposing Proposition 8, which would define marriage as only between a man and a woman.

On the other side, Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church, has publicly endorsed the marriage amendment. He expressed his support in an Oct. 23 e-mail to his congregation.

"For 5,000 years, every culture and every religion — not just Christianity— has defined marriage as a contract between men and women," Warren wrote. "This is not a political issue; it is a moral issue that God has spoken clearly about. There is no doubt where we should stand on this issue."
