Title V funding, a source of federal money that helps pay for abstinence-until-marriage education, officially ended Tuesday. Family advocates are bemoaning the fact that it wasn't a high priority to reinstate.
"What that means is that over a million students across the country are no longer going to be receiving the skills that are so important for them to resist sexual experimentation," said Valerie Huber, president of the National Abstinence Education Association.
Research has shown consistently that abstinence education works.
"It's helped them avoid the consequences of premarital sexual activity, but beyond that it's helped them focus on their future," she said. "It's helped them set goals for their lives that they may not have had."
The Obama administration appears to have no interest in reinstating the abstinence money. In the meantime, tax dollars will go to support contraceptive-based sex education.
