Without California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's veto, Senate Bill 572 will designate May 22 as 'Harvey Milk Day.' The measure also encourages schools to include "commemorative exercises" honoring the nation's first openly gay politician.
Ron Prentice, executive director of the California Family Council, said while Schwarzenegger vetoed the bill last year, it's not known what he'll do this time around.
"Definitely the jury's out," Prentice said, "primarily because of the film 'Milk' and the governor's Hollywood connections, and whether he's getting pressure from them to follow through with signing it into law this time around."
Prop 8 spokeswoman Sonja Eddings Brown said California's children deserve better.
"It's not right," she said. "They deserve to be able to determine who they are without the interference of adult agendas or political agendas. Not only is it expensive and silly, it's wrong."
