Democrats who claim federal law prohibits the public funding for abortion in their health care proposals are dodging the truth, according to a video by the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List.
The Hyde Amendment prohibits federal funding of domestic abortions. Democrats claim it prevents spending for abortions across the board, but, in fact, it's limited to the annual Health and Human Services (HHS) appropriations bill. Current health-care reform proposals would be funded by revenue streams outside the HHS budget.
Carrie Gordon Earll, senior bioethics analyst at Focus on the Family Action, said hiding behind the amendment won't work.
"If you hear someone telling you that the Hyde Amendment protects taxpayer dollars from funding abortions in health-care reform, they either don't know what they're talking about, or they're selling you a bill of goods."
