Pennsylvania Buffer-Zone Law Challenged

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Friday that Pittsburgh cannot put two forms of speech restrictions on pro-life counselors at the city's abortion clinics.

The city wanted to put a 15-foot no-contact buffer zone around the clinics and an 8-foot bubble around clients and staff.

David Cortman, senior legal counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund, said the city must choose between the two.

"The court basically drew a well-needed line in the sand that government officials may not cross," he said. "The court agreed with us that it prohibited too much speech."
