Portrayals of Violence Against Women on the Rise

"Women In Peril," a Parents Television Council (PTC) study, found that TV storylines depicting violence against women have increased 120 percent over the past five years.  Other violent crime on TV has increased 2 percent.

Melissa Henson, director of communications and public education for the PTC, said the impact of exposure to such violence may not be known for years.

"When children are growing up on this media diet that's showing women being victimized or tortured or kidnapped," she said, "the long-term effects may be potentially devastating."
