A week after its publication, Newsweek’s cover story titled "The Religious Case for Gay Marriage" continues to generate controversy.
Dr. Albert Mohler, president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and a member of the Focus on the Family Board of Directors, critiqued the magazine's revisionist theology.
"The institution of marriage (is) the most basic human model of covenantal love and commitment," he writes. "And this notion of marriage, deeply rooted in its procreative purpose, is unambiguously heterosexual."
Dr. Mohler pointed to Dr. Robert Gagnon as another good resource.
Gagnon is an associate professor of New Testament theology at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and an expert on Scripture and homosexuality. He recently responded to Newsweek's arguments.
Caleb H. Price, research analyst at Focus on the Family, said so-called pro-gay theology simply doesn't stand up.
"It behooves Christians to dig in and educate themselves about how off-base this revisionist theology is," he said, "and to be able to lovingly and compassionately stand up for God's truth on sexuality, gender, marriage and the family."
