President Deserves Thanks for Pro-Life Stance

Bush has promised to veto life-destroying embryonic stem-cell legislation.

The U.S. House of Representatives sent a dangerous embryonic stem-cell bill to President Bush last week. Thankfully, he has promised a veto.

Tom Minnery, senior vice president of government and public policy at Focus on the Family Action, said the president deserves thanks and support for his strong pro-life stand.

On the Focus on the Family radio broadcast today, Minnery encouraged listeners to lend their support to Bush.

"Dr. Dobson said, 'Tom, tell the world about it,' so I thought I would start with all of you," he said. "This is good news."

A veto would stop the legislation that would use taxpayer money as an incentive to destroy embryos for research.

"If this bill were to become law," Bush said in a statement last week, "American taxpayers would for the first time in our history be compelled to support the deliberate destruction of human embryos. Crossing that line would be a grave mistake. For that reason, I will veto the bill."

Neither the House nor the Senate has the votes necessary to override a veto.

Bush issued a clear policy six years ago, Minnery said.

"But there's been heavy pressure on the president, from research scientists and academics, all who are eager to get their hands on federal tax money to perform experiments and then to kill live human embryos," he said. "It is not often that a president takes such a clear stand against the forces of death, in the defense of human life. This brave stand is worthy of our thanks."

Ashley Horne, federal issues analyst for Focus Action, said: "Social liberals in Congress will stop at nothing to destroy the tiniest of human lives in the name of science. The president is the only one standing in their way. He needs our support."
