Dr. Dobson Helps Pro-Family, Pro-Life Candidate Unseat Veteran Lawmaker

Solid conservative defeats liberal-leaning Republican in Maryland primary for U.S. House.

Dr. Andy Harris, a solid conservative, unseated veteran U.S. Rep. Wayne Gilchrest in Maryland's 1st District primary Tuesday. Gilchrest, a Republican, has an 18-year record of increasingly liberal tendencies.

Dr. James Dobson endorsed Harris earlier this month. Speaking as a private citizen, he wrote: "It is with a sense of great urgency that I announce my support for Dr. Andy Harris. … It is imperative that Dr. Harris win this contest!

"Dr. Andy Harris would be a splendid pro-family, pro-life voice in the House — just as he has been in the Maryland Senate."

Gilchrest, who is said to have voted with Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi more often than any other Republican, lost the race by more than 10 percentage points. He was endorsed by President George W. Bush and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

“He voted against the constitutional amendment (on) marriage; he voted to allow homosexuals to adopt children; he had been pro-abortion," Maryland state Sen. Alex Mooney told Family News in Focus.

Harris, an obstetric anesthesiologist, will face Democrat Frank Kratovil in November.
