Focus on the Family Policy Statement on Homeschooling

Homeschooling, hardly the edgy option that it was thirty years ago, is an excellent opportunity for many families.

We believe that homeschooling provides a valuable option for parents who desire an education unencumbered by the limitations in public schools.

The existence of homeschooling that encourages academic excellence promotes higher standards among all schools. We believe homeschooling in particular gives students an excellent opportunity to learn from godly parents as teachers who are the most important examples in their lives.

These parents can teach their children how to integrate a Christian worldview into every area of learning. Homeschooling also allows students to be surrounded by their parents and peers who are more likely to share a faith in Jesus Christ.

We believe that home schooling provides an important option for parents who want to educate their children within the context of the family. Home schooling allows parents to provide their children with the security, love and guidance they need during their early years of learning.

Parents can also alter the pace and style of their children's education according to their developmental needs. In addition, research indicates that children who are home schooled can learn as well or better than children in formal schooling. Home schooling also allows parents to provide their children with an integrated Christian education about all aspects of life.

We oppose attempts by the government to regulate Christian home schools in ways that violate the integrity of their practice, unduly impede their existence and formation, or have no compelling state interest.
