There is no silver bullet when it comes to protecting children from pornography anymore. Even if you make your own home secure, as one writer noted, your children still need to walk out your door at some point. Nevertheless, there are some basic steps you can take to reduce the chances of your child being exposed to pornography.
Don't allow your children to have a computer in the bedroom, even if there is no Internet access. Children can easily download and store pornography from the library or at a friend's house on a thumb drive that would be very difficult to detect. Keep the family computer in a central location and install filtering and monitoring software. For more information on products and resources, visit Focus on the Family's Protection Suite.
The best defense, however, is to prepare your child for the unpleasant aspects of pornography through regular and intentional interaction. Teach them about healthy sexuality and help prepare them with a plan for what to do if they are exposed to pornography. You may be able to build walls around them in childhood, but helping them develop character will be protection for a lifetime.
