American Heritage Girls a Growing Christian Alternative to the Girl Scouts

Parents seek a program that reflects their values.

As Girl Scouts of the USA becomes increasingly liberal in its outlook, a new organization, American Heritage Girls (AHG), is stepping in to offer a Christian alternative.

In the past five years, the Girl Scouts have lost more than 100,000 members, in large part because the group has caved in to political correctness, removing references to God and country from its motto and lessons.

Patti Garibay, executive director of AHG, said its message appeals to parents who are trying to raise godly women.

"Parents are looking for programs that complement their family’s values, not contradict them,” she told Family News in Focus. “We were founded to be a Christ-centered scouting organization that uplifts God in all that we do.”

In 1993, when the Girl Scouts removed God from its motto, some scout leaders formed AHG. The group is operating in 33 states, with a goal of having troops in all 50 states by 2008.

Yvette Maher, vice president of sanctity of human life at Focus on the Family, said she's impressed with how well the organization is run.

“I was just floored by their professionalism," she said. "I was floored by really what they brought as walking out their vision statement and walking that out in their organization.”
