Each year, more than 100,000 flags flown over the U.S. Capitol are sent to people who request them. Now, the certificates accompanying those flags will no longer include the name of God.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Tuesday defended the Architect of the Capitol's refusal to allow "God" on flag certificates.
Rep. Michael Turner, R-Ohio, and more than 100 Republican supporters sent a letter to Pelosi, urging her to reverse the rule banning the use of religious expressions on the certificates. The matter was brought to Turner's attention by an Eagle Scout in his district who received a flag certificate from which God had been excised.
Turner told the Cleveland Plain Dealer he will continue seeking signatures for his letter asking Pelosi to overturn the policy.
"We have the responsibility for these common-sense issues that might arise with flag inscriptions, and this one is basic," Turner said. "The architect has decided the word 'God' is offensive. This rule should not be allowed to stand."
