The Manassas, Va., City Council voted Tuesday to create a committee to study what regulations and guidelines abortion clinics in the city operate under and to determine whether stricter guidelines are needed, The Washington Post reported.
Clinics and doctors are required to follow regulations and conduct-requirements from the state Board of Medicine and the Department of Health Professions.
City Councilman Marc Aveni, the resolution's author, said he is concerned with issues such as cleanliness, after-care, inspections, hospital privileges and procedures performed on minors.
"Members of the Manassas City Council may be surprised to learn how little the abortion industry is regulated in its own city and state," said Dawn Vargo, associate bioethics analyst for Focus on the Family Action. "Even when laws and regulations are in place, abortion facilities may be in violation, as we've recently seen in Kansas. So these city leaders are headed down the right path."
