Are you dreaming of a white Christmas?
I am, but I'm not envisioning snow so much as a sea of white ribbons proudly displayed across the land. This year's White Ribbon Against Pornography campaign is designed to kick off an entire year of activity to raise national awareness of the dangers of pornography leading into the 2008 elections.
The White Ribbon campaign was started by a Pennsylvania woman more than two decades ago to help folks understand the dangers of pornography and highlight ways they can get involved in stemming the tide of this destructive material.
More than 20 years ago, about the time the White Ribbon campaign started, Dr. James C. Dobson considered the fight against porn a "winnable war." It still is, and Christians everywhere are on the offensive. Consider these examples:
- The state of Ohio recently passed a law banning lap dances and requiring sex shops to close by midnight. The strip clubs sued in federal court because, if the law stands, it will put many of them out of business.
- This year, an appeals court in Kentucky found a law regulating sexually oriented businesses in Louisville to be constitutional, clearing the path to clean up the more than 200 sex shops in the city. Similar laws have been upheld this year in Michigan, Florida and Texas.
- Churches in the Kansas City area have circulated petitions to convene grand juries to investigate porn shops over violations of obscenity law.
When citizens stand up and fight, they win. Even if you have never done anything to fight porn, you can help. Your phone call, e-mail, or letter to the editor can join with hundreds and thousands of others working to voice their alarm and take back our communities.
