British Media Group Bans Personal-Services Advertising

A media group in the United Kingdom has banned all personal-services advertisements from its publications over fears the ads could be linked to criminal activity.

In many cities, personal ads and those for erotic services and massage parlors are significant sources of local prostitution. As a result, the Manchester Evening News, Reading Evening Post, Surrey Advertiser and all associated media no longer will publish health club, escort or personal-services advertising.

MEN Media, a group of more than 20 daily and weekly newspapers, became concerned that if the advertisements were used for criminal activity, the media could be seen as profiting from a crime.

Daniel Weiss, senior analyst of media and sexuality for Focus on the Family Action, agrees the media have a responsibility not to contribute to criminal and destructive behavior. He also encouraged concerned Americans to examine their local newspapers

“If these types of ads are present, contact these papers and find out if they have a policy concerning what kinds of ads they will accept,” he said. “Then, kindly request they stop accepting ads that could contribute to criminal activity.

“This is the kind of activism that anyone can do and which can have a very positive outcome for their community. I would also encourage friends, family and churches to get involved.”

TAKE ACTION
If you notice escort or personal-services advertising in your local newspaper, ask the management to refuse the ads. You can find contact information through our Action Center.
