Senator Aims to Keep Federal Indian Funding away from Abortion

One of the first items on the U.S. Senate's calendar next week is consideration of an extension of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act.

Sen. David Vitter, R-La., is sponsoring an amendment to the bill — S. 1200— to keep the funds from going toward abortions.

The amendment language is based on the Hyde Amendment, which forbids federal funding of abortions. Indian health services are funded through the Interior Appropriations bill, which has never been subject to the Hyde Amendment.

"Constituents need to urge their senators to support this important pro-life amendment so that the longstanding policy of protecting the preborn can be codified into law," said Ashley Horne, federal policy analyst for Focus on the Family Action.
