The nation’s mortgage crisis seems to be shaking the foundation of many marriages and may be contributing to the divorce rate, experts say.
“Given the current crisis and the financial strain that it puts on families, marital discord is one of the possible outcomes," said Nicolas Retsinas, director of Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies. "And that could very easily lead to an increase in divorce.”
Howard Dayton, co-founder of Crown Financial Ministries, said money problems are the No. 1 cause of divorce.
“We’re clearly seeing an increased stress factor in so many families in America today," he said. "They’re facing significantly more debt. There are 2 million folks that are going to lose their homes this year.”
Families can work through this very difficult situation, Dayton said. Three things are needed, he said: "They have a biblical perspective of how to handle money, they’re on the same page, and they have a biblical perspective of their marriage."
