State Rep. Donald J. Cazayoux Jr., a Democrat, captured a U.S. House seat held by Republicans for 33 years in a special election Saturday in Louisiana. Cazayoux defeated pro-lifer Woody Jenkins, 49 percent to 46 percent.
Cazayoux was endorsed by Democrats for Life of America, but his views aren't exactly pro-life — he supports dangerous human-cloning research and believes health insurance should cover abortion drugs.
Richard H. Baker vacated the seat in February to become a lobbyist.
John Paulton, manager of special projects at Focus on the Family Action, said it seems that more ostensibly pro-life Democrats are being elected from fairly conservative districts.
"On one hand, it’s encouraging to see the Democratic caucus get a pro-life infusion," he said. "On the other hand, it’s troubling for two reasons. First, once in Congress they have frequently been disappointing, and second, they defeat Republicans who often are much stronger on life than they are.
"The Louisiana race is a great example of that. Woody Jenkins has been a tremendous champion on the life issue, while Cazayoux holds some troubling positions on life."
