Facebook, a popular social-networking Web site, has agreed to add safety standards to protect children from online predators and inappropriate content.
Facebook will verify users’ ages and has pledged to be more aggressive in removing inappropriate content and groups. It also has agreed to work with an Internet safety task force.
Attorneys general from 49 states and the District of Columbia were involved in the agreement.
"Online sexual predators use social-networking sites to commit crimes against children," Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said in a statement. "The intent of this agreement is to make Facebook safer for children and help parents protect their children."
Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller supports the agreement, but said parents still provide the best protection.
"Parents should have repeated conversations with youths about possible threats, including online predators," he said, "and should know what sites their children are visiting.”
