Rep. Kevin McCarthy, a pro-family lawmaker from California, will head up the Republican Party's platform committee at the national convention in September.
Life advocates hope he steers the party towards a deeper respect for life.
McCarthy has a perfect voting record on pro-family issues, according to the FRC Action / Focus on the Family Action scorecard. The National Right to Life Committee reveals a perfect record on pro-life issues, as well.
“His selection is a positive step forward toward retaining a conservative Republican Party platform," said Jim Bopp, a Republican National Committee member from Indiana.
Ashley Horne, federal policy analyst for Focus Action, said McCarthy must defend the party’s socially conservative platform.
“The 2004 Republican Party platform includes the position that legal recognition and benefits should be preserved for the unique and special union of one man and one woman in marriage," she said. "Sensible, pro-family policies like this must be retained in the party platform.”
McCarthy will gather input from Republicans across the nation in time for the Sept. 1-4 convention.
