Federal authorities, with the help of local law enforcement agencies, made multiple arrests Wednesday in Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio in connection with an international prostitution and human-trafficking ring. Police raided 19 massage parlors.
Bruce Purdy, grassroots director for Citizens for Community Values (CCV) in Ohio, said human trafficking is nothing less than modern-day slavery.
“By definition, what we’re dealing with here is the raw exploitation of human beings, compelling human beings to provide labor or to engage in commercial sex against their will, by means of force, fraud or coercion,” he said. “The human slavery that has been exposed right here in Ohio is shocking and shameful.”
Ohio is one of 14 states without human-trafficking laws. CCV is working with leaders in the Ohio General Assembly on sex-trafficking legislation.
