For the second time, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm has vetoed a bill that would ban partial-birth abortions.
The bill would make it a felony for a doctor to perform the gruesome procedure, resulting in two years in prison and/or a $50,000 fine.
A similar federal law upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court last year prohibits the procedure, but Brad Snavely, executive director of the Michigan Family Forum, said a state law is necessary.
"Having a state law strengthens enforcement of the federal ban,” he said, “and makes it clear that partial-birth abortion will not be allowed in our state.”
Snavely is working on an override, which would require two-thirds support in the House and Senate.
