SBC Leader Highlights Four Battles Facing the Family

Christians encouraged to stand strong on homosexuality, sanctity of life, Internet porn, Islamic influence.

A well-known evangelical told the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) recently that the family must engage in four key battles: homosexuality, the denial of the sanctity of human life, Internet pornography and Islamic influence.

Dr. Richard Land, president of the SBC's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, said every Christian has a responsibility.

“You know we all have a circle of influence," he said. "A revival … is going to start with each one of us, individually — our marriage, our family, our home, our church, our community.

“We must protect and really restore and regenerate the family.”

Carrie Gordon Earll, senior bioethics analyst at Focus on the Family Action, said the fight to protect life demonstrates the power of determination.

“Last year, we had a Supreme Court ruling that, for the first time, upheld a particular ban on abortion, indicating they would entertain that in the future," she said.

While the number of abortions has declined and ethical stem-cell research is saving lives, Earll said physician-assisted suicide and a hostile Congress continue to present challenges.

“We have quite a task ahead of us," she said, "but it is very possible because God is on our side.”
