Reality TV Show Tests Teens' Parenting Skills

'This is kind of an evolution in the education process, and certainly the most realistic.'

NBC's new reality series The Baby Borrowers which premieres tonight, features five teenage couples who "test out" parenting, first with babies then toddlers, pre-teens and teenagers. They also get a shot at caring for senior citizens.

The teenagers quickly realize parenting isn’t easy.

“This is kind of an evolution in the education process, and certainly the most realistic," said Linda Klepacki, sexual health analyst at Focus on the Family Action.

She said she hopes the show discourages teens from becoming parents too early.

“Remaining abstinent until marriage is the only way to prevent teen pregnancy 100 percent of the time," Klepacki said.

Debbie Olsen, a nurse at Project Reality, said teenagers should recognize that children — at the proper time — enrich life.

“They are an ultimate gift and a blessing," she said, "but part of your task as an adolescent is to grow up, learn to be unselfish, learn to be patient, so you can handle an assignment such as having children and raising them in a positive way.”
