Sen. John McCain took his "Straight Talk" straight to conservatives Thursday night as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee looked to shore up support from the party's base, CNN.com reported.
At a Cincinnati town hall meeting, McCain talked about everything from Iraq to taxes. But he never mentioned key conservative issues such as abortion and same-sex "marriage."
"John McCain needs to talk about life more often; he needs to talk about marriage," said Phil Burress, president of Citizens for Community Values (CCV) in Ohio. "If the senator thinks he is going to run the campaign appealing to the middle by avoiding the social issues, he is going to lose Ohio."
Burress was one of a handful of Ohio conservatives invited to meet privately with McCain. CCV is associated with Focus on the Family.
