Good News: Victory for Man Who Lost Job after Requesting Sundays Off

An Oklahoma man fired for requesting Sundays off has been paid back wages and is eligible for rehire, following a lawsuit by the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF).

Paul Royse was fired from his job as a security guard with the Oklahoma Office of Juvenile Affairs for requesting time off so he could attend church. The head of security treated Royse’s written request as a letter of resignation.

“Christians shouldn’t be penalized for abiding by their beliefs, nor should they be forced to choose between their career and their faith,” ADF Senior Counsel Kevin Theriot said. “Federal law requires that employers reasonably accommodate employees with sincerely held religious beliefs.”
